Start with how you will use it
Measure the kitchen opening, delivery route, hinge clearance and ventilation gaps before choosing capacity. Compare annual energy use on labels for similar capacities. A larger door count does not automatically mean better cooling or lower running costs.
Types, advantages and trade-offs
| Type | Best suited to | Advantages | Limitations / costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single door | Smaller households and limited space | Usually lower initial cost and simpler layout | Manual defrost on many models; smaller freezer |
| Double door | Families needing separate freezer access | Convenient separation; frost-free options | More space and energy than some smaller units |
| Side-by-side | Households wanting organised large capacity | Easy access to separate tall compartments | Narrower shelf widths; doorway and floor space needed |
| French door | Wide dishes and flexible fresh-food storage | Wide shelves and useful drawer layouts | Typically higher purchase and component costs |
Compare the full cost, not just the sticker
Obtain current written quotations for models of the same size or capacity. Purchase prices vary by model, seller, offer and location; the table uses relative cost factors instead of presenting an unverified price list. Ask whether delivery, installation, necessary accessories and removal of an old appliance are included.
| Cost to compare | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Purchase | What is the exact model and final billed price? |
| Setup | Are installation, brackets, hoses, plumbing or electrical changes additional? |
| Running | What do the current efficiency label and your expected use suggest? |
| Maintenance | Which owner-care tasks and consumables are needed? |
| Repairability | Are model-specific parts and independent support accessible locally? |
Compare efficiency labels for similar capacities and the same applicable label period. A star rating applies to a specific model; it is not a blanket rating of a brand. Actual consumption depends on conditions and use.

Repair or replace?
If you already own an appliance, ask for a diagnosis and complete repair estimate first. Consider its age, condition, safety, component availability and expected use. A small repair and a major panel, compressor or assembly replacement have very different economics. There is no single percentage rule that makes the decision right for every household.
Write down the repair amount, any written work terms and the installed price of a suitable replacement. Check whether the new model will actually solve your space, capacity or usage problem before spending more.
A short decision checklist
- Measure the installation space and delivery route.
- List your normal daily use and essential functions.
- Compare at least two suitable models on total installed cost.
- Read energy labels, warranty terms and service access information.
- Keep a copy of the final model number and quotation.
